My Services

I currently offer therapeutic counseling using an eclectic relational model that incorporates a variety of treatment intervention strategies based on you, your goals, and what we determine works to support you achieving your goals.

Individual and Family Counseling

Explore the details of individual and family counseling to see how I can support your journey.

Individual
Family

Individual counseling sessions can take place either in person or virtual.

Family counseling is conducted in person. Virtual Family Counseling is approved on a case by case basis. If you are seeking virtual family counseling, it will need to be addressed during the consultation call, so we can determine the appropriateness of virtual sessions.

Availability & Scheduling

Individual and Family counseling sessions are available Tues-Fri.

Sat or Sun sessions are not regularly available, they are considered upon request, approval is based on counselor schedule and the need of the individual or family.

Virtual or In person sessions can be scheduled Tuesday - Thursday 10 am to 9 pm. Friday 10am to 1 pm. Friday after 2 pm is reserved for existing clients make up sessions.

Please Note: The “Golden Appointments” times, those from 4pm to 7 pm and 11am to 1pm, are the most frequently asked for times and may not be available for new clients. Clients who are flexible in their ability to schedule (selecting non-preferred times) such as 10 am, 2 pm, 3 pm, 7 pm, or 8 pm are more likely to find consistent scheduling options.

Sessions are scheduled bi-weekly, weekly, every other week, or monthly basis based on practice guidelines and therapeutic (medical) necessity. Initially in the first 6 weeks sessions are conducted weekly, any alteration to this structure is only made with clinical approval. Please note: regular scheduling of more than one session a week (not make up sessions) or monthly is only done with therapeutic approval, typically to meet a specific therapeutic need, as it may need additional documentation submission to your health insurance for payment approval. Monthly sessions are for clients with stabilization of symptoms/condition needs, essentially therapeutic goals are completed and may not qualify for health insurance payments.

My Counseling Process

The initial phase (1st 6 sessions) are all about establishing trust and building connection.

The intake session (session 1) is used to establish a preliminary or confirm a diagnosis, and a goal with an objective to accomplish within those 6 sessions. You will participate in both a clinical interview during session one and complete paper or electronic screening forms during and outside of session one. The combination of this information helps us to create a therapeutic understanding of you and your needs. Depending on the quality of the information provided (how detailed, reflective, and honest you are with me, ultimately yourself) has a profound effect on how substantive your subsequent sessions will be.

At the end of the initial phase you and I will have (1) a better determination if we are a “good fit”, (2) an agreed upon longer-term strategy to engage in during your sessions, (3) a plan of action for types of therapeutic interventions. You will have (1) a more concrete understand doing the work and what it means to implement the “in between session work”, (2) started to see some changes within yourself, and (3) changes in experiences with people and your perceptions of events/situations.

Each session consists of 3 parts (1) the brief check-in (beginning of the session) of progress, barriers, and set backs since the last session. Especially addressing any areas that we’ve identified previously as points for “overwhelm, getting stuck, or problematic” for you, (2) the bulk of the session is spent in learning new ways of thinking, reacting, or acting that will support your long-term change (depending on the therapeutic intervention), and (3) briefly at the end of each session we will discuss the in-between session work you will focus on. Depending on your particular needs therapy sessions will alternate focus between achieving short-term (1-3 months) goals while working on long-term (typically 6 or more months) goals to support sustained change, growth, and healing to improve mental health, as well as overall health and wellness.

Assessing progress is done on a per-session basis, with more structured assessments completed monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, or annually (as applicable). Assessment is crucial to helping you see the changes and recognize differences in yourself over time.

Ending Counseling Sessions

Discharge or Closure is typically a mutually agreed upon decision, where in sessions we’ve discussed closure and determined it is currently appropriate for you. During the last session a final evaluation and discharge summary will be completed and provided to you. It is preferred that if you decide to discontinue therapy with me, after the initial phase and before therapy progress is completed, that you provide notification before scheduling the last session, so as to ensure an effective discharge session can be held.

Counseling sessions can be paused for several weeks, without discharging you, due to significant life events (illness, change in jobs or school, moves within the state, changes in family, temporarily relocating out of state with an expected date of return, or other events), as long as there is an agreed upon date to resume counseling.

Reasons to End Counseling:

  1. Achieved your goals - we’ve come to a point where you are satisfied with the achievements you’ve made in changing your self. Sessions no longer feel productive because there is nothing you are working on about yourself. At this point you are encouraged to contact me in the future to return to counseling should new goals or issues come up to be addressed.
  2. My process is no longer working for you - one or both of us may come to determine that within the scope of my practice I am no longer able to help you further. Sessions no longer feel productive but there are still concerns and goals for you to work on. At this point it is determined that finding a new therapist is in your best interest. If you agree I will support you to find a new therapist (give you referrals).
  3. There is a barrier we can’t resolve to work together - typically this is some type of logistical issue where we are not able to meet, and it has been more than 3 missed sessions for you. Examples of possible barriers are scheduling conflicts, no longer able to meet at agreed location, or no longer able to do virtual sessions in private location.
  4. 3 Missed Sessions/No Contact - unfortunately it is something that does occur from time to time that rather than contacting me a client will stop attending or responding to attempts to reach them. I will reach out via messages, emails, and phone calls but after 3-4 weeks of attempts to reengage a client then an involuntary discharge is completed. Depending on the situation should the client re-establish contact sessions may resume or the client may be referred out if it is determined that is in their best interest.

Types of Therapeutic Interventions

All my therapy is based in Rogerian Therapy belief of your capacity to change within a supportive therapeutic environment. This relational based therapy focuses on building connection between you or you and your family with me as a therapist. No matter what is discussed or what your concerns are I will remain committed to the therapeutic process with you as long as it is in your, or you and your families best interest.

The Rogerian base is combined with what are called “Top Down” and “Bottom Up” approaches which deviate from the Rogerian approach of listening and asking clarifying questions to help clients realize change internally on their own. I am not there to just listen and ask challenging questions. In my experience most of my clients come to therapy because they need extra support and education in certain areas to be able to effect lasting positive change for themselves.

In each session I will bring a component of building cognitive change (Top Down) and improving body regulation (Bottom Up) through various techniques. The Top Down (or Cognitive approach) focuses on psychosocial emotional education framed in CBT and DBT concepts, trauma and complex trauma healing, attachment styles and wounds, and letting go of childhood shame and disappointments to improve beliefs about self, others, and the world. Along with multiple Bottom Up approaches that focus on making body based changes through lifestyle choices, mindfulness techniques, and building the ability to get and stay more effectively in ventral vagal nerve activation (see also Safe & Sound Protocol) are introduced and practiced in session.

I firmly believe without balancing both body and mind in mental and behavioral health and wellness practices counseling is less effective and tends to not be sustained over time. By focusing on body work in session it allows the positive cognitive change to become embedded in order to improve emotional and behavioral reactions over time.

Presentations and Workshops

Contact me to discuss your next organization or community event.

What is the difference between a presentation and a workshop? My presentations have significant opportunities for audience involvement but a workshop is by nature is just more interactive and supports deeper learning for participants. A workshop is designed to be more hands-on and immersive which provides a more robust participant development of topic understanding.
